HOW TO BEAT THE FEAR OF INVESTING

Author - Chief Executive Officer - Set Free Capital

But here’s the thing: while saving is a smart starting point, you can’t save your way to wealth. At some point, you’ve got to start growing your money. And that’s where investing comes in

Let’s be real - investing can feel scary.

You’ve probably heard stories of people losing their savings in bad deals. Or maybe you’ve asked yourself: "How do I even know if this thing is legit?"
"What if I lose all my money?"

If that’s you, I want to say - you’re not crazy, and you’re not alone. These are real, valid concerns. In fact, two of the biggest reasons most people stay away from investing are:

  • Fear of losing money.
  • Fear of the unknown.

If you've been feeling stuck or unsure where to even begin, this post is your gentle nudge. Think of it like a big sister or brother walking you through it, step by step—with no judgment.

1. Invest in What You Understand

Most people are afraid of investing because they simply don’t understand how it works. Totally fair. We all fear what we don’t understand.

So don’t stay in that fear - get curious

Start learning. Watch videos, ask questions, attend a workshop, book a consultation, read that blog. You don’t need to become Warren Buffet overnight. Just start learning.

2. Learn How Different Investments Actually Make You Money

Each investment product has its own way of generating returns.

Some grow your money slowly over time (like treasury bonds).
Others give you regular payouts (like SACCO dividends ).
Some are better for quick savings goals (like money market funds).
Others are for the long haul (like stocks and retirement plans ).

Your job? Match the right investment to the right goal .
That one shift alone could save you years of frustration.

3. Do Your Own Due Diligence

Please don’t invest just because your cousin or favorite influencer said it’s “hot.”

Before you commit:

  • Ask what the underlying asset is.
  • Understand the risk level (low, medium, high).
  • Know the expected return .
  • Check if the company is licensed and regulated .
  • Research their history - Google is your bestie here.

Investing wisely is about asking better questions - not following the crowd.

4. Diversify Your Investments

Here’s the deal: don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Smart investors spread their money across different areas:

  • Cash & cash equivalents – money market funds, treasury bills.
  • Fixed income – bonds, fixed deposits.
  • Equities – stocks, mutual funds.
  • Alternative assets – real estate, crypto, REITs.

You don’t need 10 things. Just 3 or 4 different investments is a solid starting point . That way, if one underperforms, you’ve still got others holding you up.

5. Respect Time Horizons

Investments grow over time. Period.

Some are short-term (a few months), others need years to mature.
Don’t invest in something meant for retirement and expect results in 2 months.

When you understand how long to leave your money in each product, you’ll start seeing results that make sense—and the panic will disappear.

6. Accept That Mistakes Will Happen - and That’s Okay

Not every investment will be perfect.
That’s not a failure - it’s part of the journey.

What matters is that you:

  • Start small.
  • Learn from every experience.
  • Adjust as you go.

And remember: even not investing is a risk. Why? Because your uninvested money is losing value every single day to inflation. Yes - just sitting in your bank account, it’s shrinking slowly.

7. Just Start. Really. Start Small.

You don’t need a million shillings to invest.
Start with KES 5,000 in a money market fund.
Open a 91-day treasury bill. Just try it.

Watch what happens. Observe. Learn. Build confidence.

Sometimes, your fear isn’t based on facts - it’s based on the unknown. The moment you start, it shrinks. You’ll start to feel powerful. Capable. In control.
